Olympic Sized Cooperation: Medical Doctors, Chiropractors and Massage Therapists
Dear Patients & Friends:
According to MedPage Today, the U.S. Olympic Committee has 80 medical professionals on hand to care for its 525 athletes at the 2012 London Olympics. And the Olympic Village’s Polyclinic will have 28 doctors of chiropractic working side by side with the medical staff to provide care for U.S. athletes.
In addition, at least another 100 chiropractors will be treating U.S. athletes outside of that facility, and chiropractors are on the medical staff of other countries, including: Albania, Australia, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Phillipines, Somalia, Sweden, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Still other teams have chiropractors assisting their athletes as well, such as Dr. Michael Douglas, shown here working with the Jamaican track team.
In a press release Keith Overland, DC, CCSP, FICC, President of the American Chiropractic Association, said, “I cannot tell you how proud I am to see the invaluable role our profession now plays in arguably the most important international sporting event.”
Orthopedic surgeon Scott Rodeo, M.D., said the medical staff, chiropractors and massage therapists work together: "Everyone has their own expertise, background, and perspective," Rodeo was quoted in MedPage as saying. "You check your ego at the door, and you learn a lot. In medicine, the more information the better."
Only time and research will determine the true benefit of such cooperation, but for now the athletes certainly seem to appreciate having doctors and therapists who work together. And the U.S. athletes appear to benefit from this model of cooperation more so than any other nation’s team.
